New Dexcom continuous glucose monitor (CGM), the G6, in late 2018
Dexcom has announced that it plans to launch its new continuous glucose monitor (CGM), the G6, in late 2018.
Early data has shown the G6 to be the most accurate device the California-based tech company has released. One study involving 49 participants found the G6 collected 96 per cent of blood glucose readings within 20 mg/dl of the true glucose value.
The G6 will be one of the first products to emerge from Dexcom’s partnership with tech giant Verily (formerly Google Life Sciences).
It will feature a 10-day wear with just one fingerstick calibration per day. In comparison, Dexcom’s G4 and G5 devices both require twice-daily calibration.
Dexcom plans to submit the G6 for US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval later this year, with commercialisation the planned for the end of 2018.
I hope and pray this will not be expensive. My son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 16 months old. He is now 21 and is not very diligent in regard to checking his blood glucose. He does wear an insulin pump and am extremely grateful for this device. I realize it is extremely costly to develop new devices, new inventions but too many have diabetes and if this Watch is expensive, it will not do what it was invented for. People with diabetes have many needs, that are costly. Maybe realizing if Watch is reasonable to purchase, more will be bought and a greater profit will be made. If it is expensive, fewer will be able to purchase. Maybe, if people with diabetes have an easier way to monitor their blood glucose levels, fewer will have complications and enjoy living their lives.
